Help shape Slow Spokes by volunteering!

We encourage anyone who identifies with the Slow Spokes mission to help define our direction as a community — whether that’s by volunteering on a committee, providing feedback, or just by showing up, your input is welcome.

Our Committees

Leadership Committee
Plan overnights, events, workshops, and fundraisers, and generally hustle for Slow Spokes! Leadership oversees all programming and leads at least one of our other committees. The goal is to ensure Slow Spokes’ role in the community is impactful and that our offerings are filling a need for trans, non-binary, gender-expansive, and women bikepackers.

Commitment: monthly leadership meetings, ~5–8 hours per week of asynchronous work, and facilitation of as many events as possible

Media Committee
Document and promote what Slow Spokes is up to by making reels, taking photos, creating newsletters, designing event graphics, and brainstorming new ways to attract new riders.

Commitment: one hour-long monthly meeting, 2 hours per month of asynchronous work, and attendance of 1 Slow Spokes event per month

Finance Committee
Keep Slow Spokes in good financial standing by budgeting, fundraising, applying for grants, and facilitating the donation of goods!

Commitment: one hour-long monthly meeting, 2 hours per month of asynchronous work, and attendance of 1 Slow Spokes event per month

Community Development Committee
Help folks feel welcome, represented, and supported by the Slow Spokes community by planning and facilitating community-building opportunities, gathering and analyzing feedback, and community outreach.

Commitment: one hour-long monthly meeting, 2 hours per month of asynchronous work, and attendance of 1 Slow Spokes event per month

Gear Library Committee
Help folks borrow the gear they need to go bikepacking by managing the lending process, host Gear Library Nights for overnight participants, update the gear wishlist, and clean/repair our gear.

Overnight and Ride Support

Overnight Lead (2/overnight)
Take ownership of a Slow Spokes overnight by planning the route, managing our lottery system/email communications with participants, and organizing all the details. Overnight Leads are responsible for making sure all participants receive packing lists, safety/bear talks, and camp orientation, and are the point person for emergency response. Overnight Leads are also typically Ride Lead or Sweep.

Ride Lead (2/ride)
Ride Leads should be confident in their ability to lead a group ride, keep folks together, and center the experience of the least-comfortable/most-marginalized person in the group. Ride Leads know the route and keep an appropriate pace.

Jelly (1 per 10 riders)
Jelly keeps the group together by splitting gaps between folks. Help with communication between ride support and participants and “be the voice” for folks who might need a break or snack.

Sweep (2/ride)
Ride in the back of the group and ensure no one is left behind. Sweeps are typically also Mechanics.

Mechanic (1/ride)
Carry a toolkit and assist with mechanical issues that may arise.

Medic (1/ride)
Carry a First Aid kit and assist with medical issues that may arise.

Support Vehicle (1/overnight)
Occasionally we like to have someone drive a Support Vehicle to set up Aid Stations along the route, carry group camp gear, assist with emergency bail-outs, and store bear attractants overnight.
